Julian Smith, the comedian and actor whose YouTube channel has nearly 2 million subscribers, is one of Rofkin’s original creators. He knows firsthand about the creator’s dilemma found on other digital platforms, particularly YouTube.
“YouTube had great editors at one point who would hand select videos for the homepage, now it’s all algorithmically curated,” Smith said. “Back then, the threshold for ‘viral’ was much higher. Today, our content has less replay value. It seems Google has settled for the low-hanging fruit. It’s amazing to have metrics for audience retention, but there’s something intangible about greatness, it can’t be defined, much less by an algorithm.”
Smith grew tired of trying to fight the system.
“Many (creators) have tried to speak up, but these companies aren’t incentivized to change anything,” he said. “The algorithms aren’t just making them tons of money. They’re saving them money that they once had to spend on a tasteful curator. We’ve traded punctuated moments of greatness for a baseline of entertainment value. Boring.
“After a decade of building a business around my YouTube channel — 2 million subscribers and half a billion views on my personal channel alone — I’m lucky to break 250K views on a video today. I don’t want to bash the algorithms because we really do need them, but YouTube would be much more culturally relevant as a brand if they had a badass editor. They’re strangely distant and indifferent for how many voices they facilitate.”
Julian found an alternative to YouTube in Rokfin. He signed up to be one of the first creators because he knew with this new, innovative platform, there’s no arbitrary algorithm steering his creative process.
“Rokfin allowed me to make what I wrote, scripts I’d been sitting on for years,” he said. “Algorithms weren’t steering my creative process. Artistic expression is the opposite of conformity; that’s the biggest problem with these algorithm-centric platforms. Rokfin facilitates a creative spontaneity which I haven’t felt in years.”
For Julian, Rokfin is the solution. He can see his FULL potential creatively and financially. Unlike with YouTube, there is no stealing digital network effects from the content creators. He is just one of many creators coming onto Rokfin.
